WHAT IS MALL?
|
Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) describes an approach to language learning that is assisted or enhanced through the use of a handheld mobile device.
MALL has evolved to support students’ language learning with the increased use of mobile technologies such as mobile phones (cellphones), MP3 and MP4 players, PDAs and devices such as the iPhone or iPad. With MALL, students are able to access language learning materials and to communicate with their teachers and peers at any time, anywhere. |
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CALL AND MALL
Although MALL is no doubt in some ways unique, the research, insights, and experiences from its cognate disciplines of CALL and other domains of mobile learning provide valuable, perhaps even crucial, inputs to the field. Put another way, MALL has so much in common with CALL and ML that it is best understood as mostly belonging to both disciplines rather than being set apart from them (though note that the figure incorporates a “MALL-specific” region as well). In the remainder of this section, we will provide some examples of relevant generalizations

MALL: ANYTIME, ANYPLACE?
Mobility and portability too often seem not to be fully exploited in the design of MALL activities, even though it is precisely these affordances that justify using mobile devices at all

2. MALL in China
Some teachers are trying to use smartphone to help students learn English. One of the examples is to use the Wechat (most popular social network app in China) as a tool to teach and learn English. Students can use their smartphone to follow the public subscription account and participate in different activities based on Wechat.
1) Students should register with their student number and are grouped as different study team.
2) Teachers can assign different tasks and students can post their answers on the mobile phone screen. Teachers can show the answer on a computer screen.
3) Teachers can provide English learning materials on the Wechat and students can download or study online. If there are any questions, students can ask for help with the messages of the Wechat.
4) Students can learn Enlish or participate in the learning activities at any time in anywhere if there is internet access for their mobile phone.
